Delivery of Chronic Care (DOCC) is a component of pediatric medicine that requires an understanding of a patient's home environment and collaboration with parents.

Project DOCC Houston connects pediatric resident physicians with DOCC Parent Teachers who share their personal family experiences of caring for a child living with disabilities and/or chronic illnesses. Parent Teachers welcome residents into their home for an immersive educational experience which has proven to increase resident physicians' openness to work closely with families to care for patients with chronic health needs.

Project DOCC Houston consists of a volunter faculty of Parent Teachers who all care for their children living with disabilities and/or chronic illnesses.

Project DOCC curriculum is focused on giving resident physicians the perspective of families managing their children’s complex needs at home and in the community with real-life experiences that are difficult to portray in a medical textbook or hospital or clinic setting. Dialog portrays how each patient has unique sets of health needs and home environments.

The sessions with DOCC Parent Teachers are required components of the residency programs in Houston, Texas.

Our Mission

  • To provide pediatric resident physicians with a comprehensive understanding of what families experience on a daily basis when caring for children living with disabilities and/or chronic illnesses.

  • To train parents and families to be “Parent Teachers” so they can broaden the pediatric resident physician’s perspective beyond the hospital and office setting and into the home and community.

  • To illustrate the need for improved “Delivery of Chronic Care” and planning between physicians and parents in order to improve the quality of life and educational opportunities for children living with disabilities and/or chronic illnesses.

  • To educate and empower families of children living with disabilities and/or chronic illnesses to become skillful family and community advocates by providing assistance, training and support.
